New Elgrand MPV to help save Nissan

Focus on domestic market with new Elgrand, Roox and Patrol to aid in Nissan reboot

4 Nov 2025

NISSAN’S fortunes may be about to turn on the back of its recently implemented revival plan called Re:Nissan, part of which includes new models that made their public debut at last week’s the Japan Mobility Show.

The plan, together with new models – of which some might become available globally – are hoped to “energise the Japan market” according to Nissan.

Headlining Nissan’s Tokyo show presence was the fourth-generation Elgrand people mover, a nameplate never officially sold Australia but popular as a grey import, which arrives on the Japanese domestic market mid-2026.

Conversely, the Y63 Patrol four-wheel drive is confirmed for the Japanese market – returning Nissan to a segment it has not competed in domestically since production of the Safari ended in 2007 – during Japanese fiscal year 2027.

At the other end of the size spectrum was the latest version of Nissan’s boxy Roox kei car, joined on the show stand by the new-generation Leaf battery electric vehicle.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa, who is charged with rebuilding the faltering auto-maker, reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing Nissan’s performance in its core markets.

“A strong, vibrant Japan market is important for Nissan’s global success,” he said.

“We are dedicated to reigniting that spirit by honouring our heritage, launching the Patrol 4x4 as a new flagship for Japan, elevating the legacy of the Elgrand (MPV) through electrification and advanced intelligence, and pushing technological boundaries with our EVs.

“Our goal is to offer a range of compelling vehicles, from the smallest Roox to our flagship models, that not only meet daily needs but also inspire emotion and pride.”

The new Elgrand is powered solely by Nissan’s third-generation E-Power hybrid system that features a newly developed, purpose-built engine and modular five-in-one electric powertrain designed for refined performance, quieter operation, and improved fuel efficiency.

It will also be the first Nissan to be fitted with an updated E4orce all-wheel drive system, which Nissan says uses the rear electric motor to suppresses pitching during acceleration and deceleration, providing a smooth, comfortable ride for passengers and reducing the likelihood of motion sickness.

“For the driver, the system actively utilises rear motor torque during cornering for a more enjoyable and engaging experience, claims Nissan.

“An intelligent dynamic suspension system minimises body roll and maintains a flat stance, ensuring a smooth ride.”

The effects of Re:Nissan are said by the company to be reflected in its commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction and long-term growth in the Japanese market and beyond.

In pursuit of this goal, the new Elgrand aims to deliver comfort, safety, and “joy” for families on the move, says Nissan.

First appearing in 1997, the Elgrand has carved a niche in Japan’s “premium minivan” segment, earning a reputation for its spacious, luxurious interiors and engaging driving performance.

The new exterior embodies Nissan’s "Timeless Japanese Futurism" design language, and, emulating other entrants in the segment, features a “commanding stance” with a grille motif inspired by the Japanese Kumiko pattern that blends into the frontal light signature.

It’s available in a broad colour palette including a hero hue inspired by the combination of dawn over Mount Fuji and Shigoku, a deep red-purple symbolising elegance and nobility.

A private lounge-like interior atmosphere provides second-row passengers with ‘zero-gravity’ captain’s chairs.

Leather and woodgrain accents, along with Kumiko-inspired patterns on the door and seat trims, complement the dual 14.3-inch integrated displays. Options include a Bose 22-speaker premium sound and 64-colour ambient lighting.

The new Elgrand also features Nissan’s latest ProPilot driver assistance suite, which supports hands-off operation at speeds below 50km/h and will introduce hands-free highway driving and lane-change assistance.
