News - NissanNissan debuts next-generation ProPilot techAutonomous driving technology levels up as Nissan details latest ProPilot advancements25 Sep 2025 By MATT BROGAN NISSAN says it is on track to launch its next-generation ProPilot advanced driver assistance technologies by 2027, demonstrating the system’s capabilities in an Ariya-based prototype in Tokyo, Japan, this week.
Combining Wayve AI Driver software and Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception technologies, the system leverages the latest LiDAR, camera, and radar sensors to set what Nissan says is a “new standard for driver assistance technologies”.
Demonstrating its ability to drive safely in complex urban environments, the next-generation ProPilot system is claimed to offer a human-like experience, processing image data from onboard camera sensors in real time.
That ability allows the ProPilot system to understand its surroundings and anticipate what might happen next, and how its own actions will affect the environment around it.
Nissan says the technology can operate in much the same manner as a skilled human driver, being able to respond immediately to sudden changes in conditions.
Additionally, Wayve’s AI is inspired by how people perceive and learn from their surroundings based on insights into human cognition and behavioural processes. The technology understands how entire driving scenes evolve, rather than just reacting to single objects.
Nissan says that by learning the flow of changes in its environment, the technology can adapt to a wide variety of real-world scenarios and make accurate decisions even in complex situations, like an experienced and attentive human.
The demonstration vehicles (pictured) are capable of operating night and day, and at high speeds. It builds upon existing ProPilot technology to function not only on multi-lane roads, but also in complex urban environments.
Nissan says the initiative is part of a broader effort to innovate the way we travel, enabling cleaner, safer, and more accessible movement.
“Our current ProPilot 2.0 system has been well received, but Nissan’s next-generation ProPilot technology will bring even more innovative features and deliver the feeling that a skilled human driver is behind the wheel,” explained Nissan chief technology officer Eiichi Akashi.
“It will adapt to more complex traffic conditions and truly provide greater confidence and peace of mind, enhancing safety not only for the driver, but for everyone using the road”.
Mr Akashi said Nissan plans to launch the next-generation ProPilot system on select production models for the Japanese domestic market from the beginning of the 2027 financial year.
