Toyota Supra to be axed from Q1 2026

Current Supra to be discontinued, remains in Australian Supercars Championship

6 Jun 2025

DETUNING many sportscar enthusiasts is confirmation of the demise of Toyota’s current Supra sports coupe that will cease production from early next year – potentially putting a dark cloud over Toyota Australia’s entry in the Supercars Championship.

But Toyota Australia has cleared up any doubt saying “In the years ahead, we will continue to hone GR Supra in motorsport. Toyota Australia has committed to racing in the Supercars Championship for the next five years, and we look forward to working with partners Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing over the coming seasons.”

So all good on that front…

The cessation of Supra production stems from the model’s inability to comply with new and forthcoming safety and emissions regulations, as well as the difficulty Toyota has in financially justifying such low-volume cars – even with BMW’s assistance.

However, and according to US publication Motor Trend, all is not lost…

The outlet says a new generation Supra has been “promised” by Toyota executives – and in a far shorter timeframe than we may expect.

Quoting Toyota Motor North America senior vice president of product planning and strategy Cooper Ericksen, the Motor Trend article it would be “logical that we (Toyota) would have a next gen Supra”.

“When and how is still to be decided,” added Mr Ericksen.

Backing Mr Erickson’s comments, Toyota Motor North America general manager David Christ said that while “we would love to build a next generation Supra, Toyota has not officially announced plans to do so”.

Mr Christ told Motor Trend that he would love to play a part in planning a new-generation Supra, but that his influence on the matter is limited, stating, “that decision is way out of my paygrade. I’d love to be in that meeting, but I probably won’t be”.

In clarifying just how long the wait will be until details of a new Supra are brought to light, Toyota’s North American executives told the publication that it will be sooner than last time, saying, “it is our goal to have a gap that is significantly less than the last one”.

“We would love to do everything now,” added Mr Ericksen.

“But we have our hands full just to keep selling the core products in our line-up.

“We’ll just have to wait and see. My goal is to get a great next-gen product that our enthusiast crowd can fall in love with again.”
