Toyota Australia axes GR Supra

Order-taking stops but GR Supra stays in Supercars Championship for next five years

18 Aug 2025

DESPITE production continuing into the new year, orders for the current model Toyota GR Supra will not be accepted by Toyota dealers in Australia from the end of this month, effectively pulling forward the sports halo model’s discontinuation Down Under.

The current generation A90 series Supra is manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr where it is built alongside its twin-under-the-skin, the BMW Z4.

Precise reasons for the move were not given by Toyota Australia suffice to say current-generation Supra sales started at 327 units in 2019 when the model was launched, 300 of which were pre-sold and waitlisted, slipping to 198 in 2020, 155 in 2021, and then only 141 in 2022.

Supra sales saw an uptick in 2023 to a total of 276 units slipping to 222 units in 2024 and are tracking year-to-date (end July 2025) at 103.

Apart from low sales volumes, speculation suggests the end of A90 Supra production also stems from the model’s inability to comply with new and forthcoming safety and emissions regulations, as well as the difficulty Toyota has in financially justifying such low-volume cars – even with BMW’s assistance.

In its statement and giving hope to fans of the sleek coupe, Toyota Australia said “the GR Supra nameplate will live on beyond 2026”, without revealing any further details.

The replacement model is speculated to be a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid-powered sportscar with derivative styling from the current generation.

Further cheering up Supra aficionados is Toyota Australia’s commitment to the Supercars Championship from next year – using the existing model as a basis fitted with a modified Lexus V8

In early June GoAuto reported Toyota Australia responding to questions about its ongoing Supercars Championship commitment with: “In the years ahead, we will continue to hone GR Supra in motorsport.

“Toyota Australia has committed to racing in the Supercars Championship for the next five years, and we look forward to working with partners Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing over the coming seasons.”

So, all good for the Toyota Supercar Championship contender, what of the new-generation car?

Toyota has kept a lid on it apart from a commitment emanating out of Toyota USA where some highly placed executives have gone on record saying there will not be as long a delay between the current and new generation models as there was between the last two – essentially confirming the existence of a new model.

US publication Motor Trend says a new-generation Supra has been “promised” by Toyota executives – and in a far shorter timeframe than many previously expected.

Toyota Motor North America senior vice president of product planning and strategy Cooper Ericksen told the publication it would be “logical that we (Toyota) would have a next gen Supra”.

“When and how is still to be decided, and we would love to do everything now,” he added.

“But we have our hands full just to keep selling the core products in our line-up.

“We’ll just have to wait and see. My goal is to get a great next-gen product that our enthusiast crowd can fall in love with again.”
