XPeng X9 priced for Australia

CHINESE electric vehicle specialist XPeng has taken direct aim at Australia’s emerging premium electric people-mover segment, launching its flagship X9 from $89,900 plus on-road costs – thousands of dollars less than several key rivals while offering an extensive list of luxury, technology, and performance features.

The seven-seat X9 arrives as the second model under XPeng’s factory-backed Australian operation and broadens the brand’s local portfolio beyond the G6 SUV, with deliveries commencing shortly.

Available in two grades, the line-up comprises the X9 Standard Range front-wheel drive priced from $89,900 + ORC and the flagship all-wheel-drive Performance variant from $109,900 + ORC.

The pricing places the X9 among an increasingly competitive field of premium battery-electric people movers that includes the Zeekr 009, Denza D9, LDV Mifa 9, and Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX.

However, XPeng has positioned the X9 aggressively against those rivals, undercutting the Zeekr 009 by around $25,000 while also offering a lower point of entry than several similarly specified competitors.

The strategy reflects growing competition among Chinese manufacturers seeking to establish themselves in Australia’s premium electric vehicle market by offering high levels of equipment at comparatively accessible prices.

XPeng Australia and New Zealand head of marketing and creativity Damian Royce said the X9 combined the practicality of a traditional people mover with the driving characteristics expected of a premium SUV.

“A car this size is not supposed to drive this well,” he said.

“The X9 combines the space and practicality of a seven-seat MPV with the refinement and confidence of a luxury SUV, using technologies such as Active Rear-Wheel Steering and intelligent dual-chamber air suspension to make it feel far smaller and sharper from behind the wheel.

“But what truly sets the X9 apart is the way it treats every passenger’s time as something worth designing for, with a premium cabin and a factory-backed ownership experience that reflects Xpeng’s long-term commitment to Australia.”

Both X9 variants are built on XPeng’s latest 800-volt silicon carbide electrical architecture, providing ultra-fast charging capability and supporting the importer’s claim of a 10 to 80 per cent recharge in as little as 12 minutes under ideal conditions.

The Standard Range uses a 94.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery offering up to 535km of WLTP driving range, while the Performance variant upgrades to a 110kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery with a claimed range of up to 580km.

Power and torque output for the entry model is 235kW/450Nm  climbing to 370kW and 640Nm in the dual-motor Performance variant, which completes the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 5.9 seconds.

Unlike many large people movers, XPeng has sought to differentiate the X9 through its driving dynamics.

As noted by Mr Royce, every variant is equipped with Active Rear-Wheel Steering, intelligent dual-chamber air suspension and the company’s “AI chassis management system”, technologies more commonly associated with premium luxury SUVs than family-focused MPVs.

XPeng says the combination provides greater agility in urban environments while maintaining ride comfort and stability on the open road.

Inside, the X9 offers a flat-floor cabin capable of seating seven adults, while still providing 721 litres of luggage capacity behind the third row.

Flexible seating allows the cabin to be configured as a four-, five-, six- or seven-seat layout, with one-touch folding increasing cargo capacity to a claimed 2554 litres.

Among the premium appointments are XPeng’s Zero Gravity second-row seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, a 21.4-inch rear entertainment display, 27-speaker XOpera audio system, five-zone climate control, panoramic glass roof, and integrated heated and cooled refrigerator.

The X9 also becomes the first XPeng model offered in Australia with the company’s self-developed Turing AI chip, delivering 750 TOPS (Trillions of Operations Per Second) of computing power to support faster infotainment processing, improved voice recognition, and advanced driver assistance functions.

Driver assistance is provided through XPilot Assist, which combines cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to deliver adaptive cruise control, lane centring, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a suite of automated parking functions.

Safety credentials include a high-strength body structure, nine airbags, 16 active safety functions, and battery protection systems designed to meet five-star crash safety requirements.

The X9 is backed by XPeng Australia’s seven-year/unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty for private buyers, an eight-year/160,000km warranty covering the high-voltage battery and electric drive system, and servicing intervals of 12 months or 20,000km.

Available to order immediately through XPeng’s expanding factory-backed dealer network, the X9 represents the second stage of the company’s ambitious Australian expansion following the introduction of the updated G6.

It will soon be joined by the L03, G9L, and L05 as part of a five-model rollout scheduled over the next six months, with XPeng aiming to bring future products to Australia in closer alignment with their Chinese-market launches.

In entering the premium electric people-mover segment, XPeng is betting that buyers will value a combination of luxury, technology, and rapid charging over traditional brand recognition — and, at under $90,000, it has given established rivals plenty to think about.
