XPeng: all future models coming to Australia

Factory-backed RHD strategy will open up major product offensive in Australia

3 Jul 2026

By TOM BAKER in CHINA

CHINESE manufacturer XPeng has committed to developing all future models with right-hand drive from the outset, effectively locking Australia into the EV and hybrid brand’s forward product development cycle as part of a factory-backed reset of local sales and service operations.

Speaking at XPeng’s Guangzhou headquarters, head of international markets Alex Tang said Australia was one of five strategic markets globally for the brand and would receive every new model developed under the company’s next expansion phase.

“We can commit that in the future, all of the new models from the company will develop with both left-hand drive and right-hand drive,” he said.

“All of the new models will go to Australia, this is our commitment. I believe that shows our focus on this market.”

It is rare for a Chinese brand to commit to exporting all models outside their home market.

If XPeng sticks to the promise, the shift will mean that Australia should be able to consider that any new model reveal will eventually come here.

Mr Tang said that the Australia and New Zealand markets were now a key focus after XPeng’s initial export push through Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, with the brand seeking to build coverage across “small, medium and large size” segments, as well as a few niches.

The company plans to disclose details, including the order of models for a forthcoming Australian product offensive, at a dealer and media event later this month.

XPeng will also provide more details of its post-TrueEV transition plan, after moving to a factory-backed structure.

Imminently launching in Australia is a facelifted version of the G6 midsize SUV that has been XPeng’s sole model offered in the local market to this point. The update will bring the option of all-wheel drive, plus a revised interior and faster DC charging times.

With the more niche X9 MPV also slated for a rapid launch, the next major volume plays are likely to be the Mona L03 – a 4600mm long mid-sized SUV from the brand’s more accessible product line – plus the forthcoming G9L flagship SUV.

“These will come to Australia, both of them,” added Mr Tang.

While Mr Tang has confirmed that all new models developed by the company will come to Australia, a question that remains is which of XPeng’s current overseas product line will be imported in the meantime.

Possibilities could include the GX flagship SUV, which has been launched in China in battery-electric and extended-range forms, and the G7 SUV, which has also been developed with extended-range technology in China.

A sedan will not join XPeng’s Australian range this year, but Mr Tang confirmed one would follow in 2027.

GoAuto understands a decision is being made between the P7, which is lower and sportier, and a larger P7+ fastback model.

Mr Tang said the model offensive would be matched by greater investment in brand, network, and service capability, describing Australia as a long-term strategic market rather than an opportunistic export destination.

He said XPeng had received “a lot of applications” from prospective dealers and was aiming to build a 100-site dealer network in Australia as soon as possible.

“We need to have more presence,” he admitted.
