Mercedes-Benz now offer a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its GLA small premium SUV claimed to offer up to 65km (WLTP) electric only range. The driveline is a “sophisticated” hybrid cranking up to 160kW/450Nm with handy all-electric commuting capabilities thanks to its 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery. Petrol power remains for longer journeys.

Borrowing the 265kW/450NM 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo powertrain from its siblings, the super hot crossover will feature Merc’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

Mercedes-Benz will add another SUV to its line-up in the form of the A-Class based GLA in 2014. The GLA is slightly longer than the A-Class and while powertrain and specs are yet to be confirmed, the GLA concept from the 2013 Shanghai motor show featured the same 155kW 2.0-litre engine as the A250 hot hatch, driving all four wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch auto.
