News - Market Insight - Market Insight 2025Market Insight: MG Motor eyes top 3 positionNew and updated models hoped to drive MG Motor from seventh to third place by 203021 Apr 2025 By MATT BROGAN MG MOTOR Australia has achieved something very few importers have or likely ever will – an almost 10,000 per cent increase in sales across an eight-year period.
Since its re-entry-in-earnest to the Australian market in 2017, MG Motor has moved rapidly from selling just 600 vehicles a year to a peak of 58,346 in 2024.
With increased volume has come market share that has risen from 0.1 to 4.8 per cent, shifting the importer from an also-ran to top 10 finisher in record time.
Now, with a swathe of new- and updated models queueing to enter Australian dealerships, MG Motor looks set to drive its position even higher.
The Chinese-owned brand recently launched new generation versions of its stalwart MG 3 light hatch, ZS small SUV, and HS medium SUV models locally, renewing interest in vehicles familiar to Australian buyers.
It also debuted its MG 4 electric and MG 5 petrol passenger models, and the sporty Cyberster electric roadster amid a growing range of new energy powertrain alternatives that have proven popular with customers seeking a more budget-friendly means of going green.
But its MG Motor’s next steps that are most likely to catapult it into its desired third place on the Australian new car sales ladder.
According to MG Motor Australia chief executive officer Peter Ciao, the brand’s introduction of the seven-seat QS large SUV, five-seat S5 EV electric medium SUV, and U9 dual-cab utility from mid-late 2025 will help shift the brand from seventh- to fifth position by the end of 2027 – and to third place by the end of the decade.
“The continued growth for MG Motor Australia will come from expanding into further market segments. It is very exciting to launch vehicles such as the U9, the QS – MG’s first seven-seat car in Australia, the MG S5 EV which arrives in May and the impending arrival of the IM5 and IM6,” Mr Ciao told GoAuto.
“We have ambitious goals to be a top-three selling OEM by 2030, growing our range is a key plank to achieve this goal.
“We are very proud of our growth since launching in 2017. We have seen the MG3 and ZS lead the respective segments for several years now.
“Along with the MG 4 and HS, we have an established range of vehicles that Australians have embraced and come to know. Our dealer network is brilliant and is nearly 100 sites Australia wide.
“2025 and 2026 will be exciting years of growth for MG as we expand our product range.”
As noted by Mr Ciao, the MG brand will soon be assisted in its ambitions by the addition of the luxury IM Motors electric vehicle range (think of IM Motors as the Lexus to MG Motor’s Toyota); set to join the line-up before the end of 2025.
Mr Ciao says the combination of the new models listed, coupled with its growing dealer network and vastly improved reputation for quality, will see MG Motor reach 60,000 sales by the end of 2025, roughly 75,000 sales by 2027, and over 90,000 by 2030.
