New models - Toyota - HiluxUp to $6K price increase for new-gen Toyota HiLuxFewer variants, single diesel engine offering for pricier new-gen Toyota HiLux ute12 Nov 2025 By TOM BAKER CONTRACTING from 23 variants in outgoing form to 16, the ninth-generation Toyota HiLux ute range will go on sale in Australia on 9 December ahead of a pre-Christmas arrival in Toyota’s local showrooms.
The ‘AN220/30’ HiLux line is fundamentally a deep revision of the outgoing eighth-gen model present on Australian roads since 2015 with a heavy refresh of exterior and interior styling while overall dimensions and hard points carry across.
Key mechanical distinctions include the discontinuation of the entry-point 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol four-cylinder engine (on emissions grounds) and the 2GD-FTV 2.4-litre diesel. The familiar 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo diesel ‘four’ becomes the standard engine, complying with Australia’s new Euro 6d requirements.
Battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell electric powertrains will be added to Australia’s HiLux range in 2026 and 2028 respectively.
As a result of the petrol giving way to the 2.8-litre diesel, the price of entry to the HiLux line jumps by more than $6000, while like-for-like prices are up by between $1020 and $5025 depending on grade.
Three variants continue with a six-speed manual making 150kW/420Nm while the balance of the HiLux line retain a six-speed automatic that bumps torque to 500Nm, while Toyota’s ‘V-Active’ 48-volt mild hybrid system has spread further into the line-up adding 8kW/65Nm of take-off thrust.
Electric power steering takes the place of the previous ute’s hydraulic configuration while HiLux is now offered with two distinct suspension tunes: a heavier-duty setup for WorkMate and SR, or comfort-orientated spring rates and stroke for higher tiers. All continue to use a leaf-sprung rear.
Variants with four-wheel drive also continue to sport a part-time system with dual-range transfer case rather than an ‘auto’ 4WD setup.
Familiar grades continue, with price-leading WorkMate offering a choice of 4x2 (single and double cab-chassis formats) or 4x4 (adding a double cab pick-up). SR alone retains a cult-favourite extra-cab shape, while SR5 continues to offer the option of a double cab-chassis alongside the double cab pick-up.
A double-flagship strategy sees the Rogue nameplate retained while the Rugged X badge returns at the same price. The GR Sport has been discontinued for now.
Now priced from $33,990 plus on-road costs, WorkMate variants run on 17-inch steel wheels but pick up a body-coloured front bumper and grille, electric mirrors and a shark fin antenna. Inside, manual fabric seats supplement a urethane steering wheel with tilt/telescoping adjustment and rubber floor mats.
The base model nabs an enlarged 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, DAB+ digital radio and a two-speaker stereo, plus manual air-con, power windows, voice command, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and two USB-C ports.
Double cab pick-up versions of the WorkMate gain an integrated tub with four tie-down hooks, a damped tailgate with lift assist, a second 12-volt socket, front and rear mudguards, and a four-speaker stereo.
Spending $5000 more to jump into an SR sees spec swell substantially to include 17-inch alloys, painted door handles, mirrors and bonnet moulding, a locking rear tailgate, side steps, high-grade front seats and nicer fabric, a leather steering wheel and shifter, rear air vents, and a wireless device charger.
SR also gains an eight-speaker stereo, 360-degree parking camera, tyre pressure monitoring, smart entry/start and remote locking and unlocking via a smartphone app. Four-wheel drive versions gain a locking rear differential, Multi Terrain Select and downhill assist, while the 48-volt system becomes optional.
It is a $6500 step into SR5, which swaps to the comfort suspension tune and picks up 18s, larger front brakes, an integrated towbar, auto-levelling LED lighting, a sports bar, privacy glass, auto-folding/heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, and a cooled glovebox.
Other SR5 interior goodies include heated front seats and steering wheel, a larger 12.3-inch instrument display, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, electric parking brake and multi-terrain monitor. Auto SR5 variants gain remote air-con activation thanks to available power from the 48-volt system.
SR5 buyers can also option a Premium Interior Package ($2500) that swaps fabric for black genuine leather while adding an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and a nine-speaker JBL stereo.
Atop SR5 spec, the Rogue co-flagship ($71,990 + ORCs) has unique wheels, sports bar and bumpers, a centrally-locked tub with carpet liner and electric roll cover, deck rails with tie-down points, mineral-coloured upholstery, and a fully fitted tow pack with tongue, ball, wiring harness and electronic brake controller.
The Rugged X (also $71,990 + ORCs) goes in a different direction over SR5 with Premium Interior with a hoopless genuine bulbar, front and rear recovery points, LED lightbar, the same tow pack and mineral upholstery as the Rogue, a bedliner, and unique decals and sports bar.
Standard across the range are safety features including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist and departure warning, speed sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a reversing camera.
All new-gen HiLux models have integrated SOS emergency calling, vehicle insight and auto collision notification functionality for as long as the 4G phone network is available.
Other connectivity features—within the Toyota Connect+ and Multimedia Connect suites—are complimentary for the 12 months of ownership but are only available via paid subscription after that point.
