Future models - Tesla - Model 3 - StandardPared-back Teslas unconfirmed for AusTesla's budget-focused Model Y and Model 3 ‘Standard’ variants not confirmed for Oz13 Oct 2025 TESLA’S pared-back 'Standard' versions of the Model Y medium SUV and Model 3 medium sedan are yet to be confirmed for the Australian market following their announcement on X, the social media network controlled by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
While Tesla already offers sharp pricing across its range as a result of numerous four-figure price cuts across the last few years, it appears to be launching the new ‘Standard’ variants as a hedge against an onslaught of competitors in its domestic North American market – and Chinese models elsewhere – by putting both the Model Y and Model 3 on a feature diet.
The announcement on X, Tesla’s preferred method of communication globally, outlined that the the Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard will be its “most affordable models yet,” with prices coming down to $US39,990 ($AU60,700) for the Model Y and $US36,990 ($56,200) for the Model 3.
Mr Musk’s promise of a $US25,000 Tesla remains yet to materialise, along with several other products including the second-generation Roadster that was announced in 2017 ahead of a planned 2020 launch date that has been pushed back on an almost annual basis ever since.
In order to pull around $US5000 out of the entry price for each Model 3 and Model Y ‘Standard’ model, Tesla is reported to have removed myriad features from trim downgrades to technology deletions.
Starting with the Model Y, Tesla has reportedly covered the panoramic glass roof with a cloth headliner, meaning owners are unable to access a feature that is technically still there – likely a cheaper move than reengineering the car with a metal roof.
The Model Y Standard will ride on 19-inch steel wheels, and the LED lightbars front and rear are gone along with adaptive high beam functionality.
Inside, the sound system has been downgraded and the eight-inch rear touchscreen has been removed, while upholstery will incorporate more cloth and less ‘vegan leather’.
Reports suggest the suspension is also a simpler, cheaper system, and the side mirrors are manual-folding.
The Model 3 Standard forfeits similar luxuries – also losing its rear touchscreen, autosteer, frequency dependent suspension and trading much of the vegan leather for cloth upholstery – it does retain a panoramic glass roof.
Battery range is also down for both models, with the Model 3 Standard capable of 321 miles (516km), down on the Premium’s 346 miles (556km), and the Model Y Standard is capable of 321 miles (516km), down on the Premium model’s 327 miles (526km).
Reports from the United States also suggest the models get less peak power, however clear figures are yet to be published on Tesla’s official website.
Both models also lose the brand’s Autosteer system, but buyers can reportedly pay to have this functionality restored via subscription.
Anothel cost-cutting move is the removal of an FM radio, which will not impact owners who rely on audio streaming services.
Based on what is known so far, it appears that Tesla has ‘turned down’ the functionality of both models, rather than re-engineer cheaper variants, and the cost savings insignificant compared with the reduction in value for money.
While it is likely the models are an America-only affair, given the country’s $US7500 electric vehicle tax credit ended on October 1, if introduced locally the Standard trims could mean sub-$50K entry pricing for Tesla models in Australia. ![]() Read more6th of October 2025 ![]() Tesla Aus confirms 750km Model 3 Long RangeMY26 Tesla Model 3 updates include new 750km Long Range rear-wheel drive variantAll future models![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Motor industry news |
