One-off Ferrari SC40 channels iconic F40

FERRARI Special Projects program has produced a one-off SC40 supercar derived from elements of the Maranello’s manufacturer’s 296 GTB model.

The veil was lifted on the attention grabbing, bespoke Ferrari in mid-October that was tailor-made for a single client.

Penned by design guru Flavio Manzoni from Ferrari’s Styling Centre, the SC40 is a mid-rear-engined V6 that borrows its architecture, chassis and powertrain from the 296 GTB.

Ferrari says it joins the most exclusive segment of the range, “that of unique, tailor-made cars, designed and built around the desires of a single client… representing the highest expression of Ferrari’s personalisation philosophy”. 

The name pays tribute to Ferrari’s legendary F40 supercar that was unveiled back in July 1987 with the SC40 echoing its sharp, angular lines that are “skilfully combined with softer surface transitions, giving the car a contemporary feel and a strong, unmistakable identity”.

 

But the SC40 is an entirely new and unique design with “industrial” inspiration says Ferrari, not a literal reinterpretation, but rather a model with its own distinct personality. 

“The proportions feature a long, low nose balanced by a short rear overhang and a high, fixed rear wing, painted in the car’s white hue, which flows from the body’s flanks,” said the Italian manufacturer.

The fixed wing extends vertically from the engine cover and merges seamlessly with it, highlighted by a black separation line that enhances the black rear fascia. 

The V6 engine is showcased through distinctive, smoked Lexan louvres, which connect visually to the lower air intake and are echoed by smaller louvres carved into the muscular rear wings near the wheel arches.

“The sculpted rear section is completed by a central exhaust featuring titanium and carbon-fibre tips, and by taillights that hint at the 296 GTB,” added Ferrari.

The side view is dominated by the intercooler air accentuated by a large triangular carbon-fibre plate while the profile is defined by vertical lines that precisely outline the crisp edges of the front wings, door cuts, and engine cover.

At the front, the vehicle is characterised by headlights placed at the outer corners, integrated into a black housing that extends downwards to connect with the lower air intake that spans the entire front bumper giving the car a striking, assertive appearance.

Inside features prodigious use of Kevlar in the footwells, behind the seats, and on parts of the floor mats the distinctive material also used for the steering wheel, some dashboard inserts, the engine bay, and the luggage compartment.

The model is upholstered is a combination of Charcoal Alcantara and a red Jacquard technical fabric, while the Prancing Horse on the headrests and the woven SC40 logo give the seats a contemporary and exclusive look. 

The SC40 White exterior colour was developed specifically for this car and features a cool hue that accentuates the body’s curves in sunlight, recalling the colour of the carbon-Kevlar used inside.

The fuel filler and charging caps are made of aluminium with a brushed finish. The 20-inch wheels, designed exclusively for this model, combine brushed metal on the diamond-cut surfaces with black spokes that emphasise their geometric form. 

The SC40 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with plug-in hybrid assistance producing a combined 610kW and 740Nm, and capable of revving to 8500rpm.

It uses an eight-speed dual clutch transmission that facilitates a 0-100km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds, 0-200km/h in 7.3 seconds, and a v-max of 330km/h.
