Refocused Alfa Romeo Tonale revealed

Alfa Romeo Tonale gets mid-life glow-up, debuting sleeker looks and sportier attitude

16 Oct 2025

ALFA Romeo has given its Tonale small SUV line-up a significant mid-life nip and tuck, with updated visuals, dynamic improvements and updated powertrains, as well as a new entry-level variant.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the updated Tonale, and Australian launch details – including which models we can expect to receive – are yet to be announced.

The updated line-up is made up of the presumably more affordable entry-level version alongside the Sprint, Ti and top-spec Veloce trims, with a launch edition Sport Speciale also on the cards.

While pricing is yet to be revealed, on a global basis Alfa Romeo has outlined that it plans to “maintain current price levels while introducing a new entry-level version” to make the Tonale “even more competitive and accessible”.

Powertrains have been updated across the range to meet the latest European emissions requirements, offering the choice of mild hybrid, diesel (likely Europe only), or plug-in hybrid power.

The base four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid system now produces 130kW, while the 1.3-litre plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain produces either 141kW or 198kW – but torque figures have not yet been disclosed.

A seven-speed automatic features on the mild-hybrid powertrains and the PHEV units get a six-speed automatic, while Alfa Romeo claims it has also refined the hybrid controller to make transitions between the electric motor and engine “imperceptible”.

The new model receives a fairly significant exterior makeover, with a wider wheel track and reduced front overhang for more aggressive proportions, riding on new 19- and 20-inch wheels that the carmaker claims are lighter.

Changes to the wheel track also offer dynamic benefits, with Alfa Romeo suggesting the wider track reduces roll and understeer.

Other dynamic upgrades include the same brake-by-wire system found in the Giulia and Stelvio, as well as the Q4 all-wheel drive system from the Ibrida PHEV, and Alfa Romeo claims the new model also has the “most direct steering in the segment”.

Inside, the updated model gets a new rotary gear selector, redesigned centre console, and  trim and upholstery tweaks.
